Hakone Tozan Train

This is the only mountain railway in Japan. The train departs from Hakone-Yumoto station (at 108 m above sea level) and takes about 40 minutes to arrive at the final stop, Gora station (at 553 m above sea level). Halfway up the line there are switchbacks, where the driver and the conductor change shifts and the train switch to reversed travel direction. It is a special experience that can be enjoyed only with the Hakone Tozan Train.

Hydrangea Train

The hydrangeas along the Hakone Tozan Railway line are in full bloom each year around the middle of June. During this period, the Hakone Tozan train is nicknamed the “Hydrangea Train.” As the Hakone Tozan train climbs up the mountain, the hydrangeas bloom from the lower end up due to the different temperatures according to the altitude, with the final blossoms at the top at the end of July. The hydrangeas grow very close to the railway and you can almost touch them from the window as you enjoy a relaxing ride up the mountain.
